The Actor Headshot
My University of Connecticut graduate students have recently had their headshots taken and some have come to me for advice. I have to admit that I don’t mince words. What can I say? I have strong opinions on the subject and those opinions are as diverse as the individuals themselves. But the bottom line is this: Keep it simple and straight forward. Head and maybe some shoulders. I prefer a neutral face, rather than a big smile. You are a serious actor, right? Play to your strength. How are you going to be cast? Choose a photograph that shows that side of yourself. Choose a photograph that shows complexity and depth, a bit of conflict. That is what I find interesting. As a director, I want to see your story in you.
